Meant to post this on New Years Eve, now, with some delay:

Here to all (and I mean ALL) warriors out there, whatever side, whatever cause, whatever place; to all those that do what soldiers do: Follow orders, sometimes along with their heart, sometimes against what their heart tells them. To those who understand what they are doing, and tho those who dont. To those who comply, and to those who cannot. To those who find spiritual aliviation and to those who lose it forever.

From my personal experience, they are all kids, and the statistics seems to be with me, even today, average combat death UK soliders in A´stan is 20: in 2010, the average age of casualities was 22, 200 killed were not older than 20, 31 were teenagers: http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2010/jun/20/death-rate-uk-soldiers-afghanistan-higher-us. For the Taliban, dont even want to guess...

To all those kids out there fighting (and to their commanders, presumably a bit older), I wish you luck, health and success for the coming year (to our enemies just in a very strictly personal sense, of course).

(from a completely different angle, I always have claimed that professional armies shold be composed of ppl 35+ yrs old, things would change considerably, but then this really is a different discussion and is not meant to mean more than a 2nd thought here).

Not quite the answer you want to hear...
Right at this moment I am listening to the "dulcet" tones of two high pressure vacuum pumps - the room I work in has two analytical instruments that require a vacuum of around 9x10-6 Torr to operate.
It's so damned noisy I wear ear defenders and I can still hear those damned vacuum pumps!

Ahh similar as a wife, you hear them even with ear defenders, try a hiking trip, it helps.

A Dutch Boy soprano, singing a classic Russian folk song, in German. It doesn't get much better.

Oh Glockenton
Heintje and The Don Cossack Choir - Serge Jaroff

Did anyone notice?...

When you first see Serge and Heintje together Serge is taller, in the last shot where they are both together on the floor, Heintje is taller even though Serge is wearing high heeled boots.

Serge was barely 147 cms tall.

I did, but I view the majority as short, but I am 191cm

This is one that I listen to a lot on my mp3 player at the moment although this YouTube clip is a live version from when the singer (Iain "Fred" Smith) was in Afghanistan. He'd been in Afghanistan as a member (diplomat) of the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs.

It's a song about Aussies in Uruzgan province in Australian story-telling style but it probably applies to all the troops from the coalition forces in Afghanistan. I like it for the traditional instruments.

P.S. I know some of the lyrics aren't too clear in this rendition so if you're interested, the lyrics can be found here

Madam, you just made my evening... .

It is 8 degrees here in the house (zero outside), my fire place still is not connected (and none of you would want to see a photo of me right now, all wrapped up in jackets and blankets as you freeze rapidly if not moving, as in front of the comp), and it is time to go to bed. And while we are at heavily descending moon right now, this song you posted is one of my favorites, same as the one(s) that I post below...

If you have a chance, check out the movie from 2003 that gave the name to AV´s soundtrack, one of the more beatiful I have seen in my life, about what makes a leader, adolsescence, love, hopes, sadness, forgiveness and the meaning of life...

I hope somebody else finds sleep on those, even if you dont live on an island like myself...!

Enjoy the vids and the music (or not),
