Not one of these taxes existed 100 years ago and our nation was the most prosperous in the world, had absolutely no national debt, had the largest middle class in the world and Mom stayed home to raise the kids.

Special interests and an overall "victim" mentality of the common American citizen thinking they are "owed" something and that the government needs to pay for it... and Americans bent over and took it. Its the "salami effect" just increasing in small enough dosages so that no one objects but cumulatively this is what you end up with. Same thing they are doing now with our rights.

Well to stick up for the government a little bit... Congress can only give so much funding for the war in Iraq, the extra cash has to come from somewhere... and anyway, one hundred years ago was a long time. Our population wasnt as high back then, we didnt have as many vehicles to put taxes on, we didnt have alot of the stuff we have now that the government has put taxes on...

Considering that most governments wind up with a budget deficit, I think the better question is: does the money ever get used wisely?
