Hmmm... if I were in England I wouldn't leave home without pepper spray to give me an advantage in a confrontation. Or would that constitute assault? If someone pulled a knife on me and I sprayed him, would I go to jail for that? I bet I would.

Or, for that matter, pulling a baton-sized torch out and beating the guy to death could be construed as "selfdefense".
