War is not about politics; it’s about our future

Wilson County News ^ | 16.NOV.05 | Elaine Kolodziej

War is deadly serious. So much so that politics should not interfere, yet America is currently experiencing a venomous dose of politics.

In the event you did not hear President Bush’s Veterans Day tribute, he set the record straight on some major issues concerning the war on terror. Here are some of the highlights.

The president responded to those who are whipping up a media frenzy that is undermining America’s war efforts, as they compare the war on terror to Vietnam. Were you listening?

The terrorist enemies of freedom point to Vietnam in the 1960s, Beirut in 1983, and Mogadishu in 1993.

Perhaps America did not get serious until the war “came to our shore on Sept. 11, 2001, … and we know they want to strike again.” President Bush vowed that America “will confront this mortal danger to humanity” and we will defeat that evil.

Since 9-11, the evil since has reappeared in Mombasa, Casablanca, Riyadh, Jakarta, Istanbul, Madrid, Beslan, Taba, Netanya, Baghdad, and most recently in London, Sharm el-Sheikh, and Jordan.

While President Bush said these attacks may seem like “random, isolated acts of madness,” the ideology behind choosing innocent victims represents a clear and evil fanaticism. Bush said it is not insanity, but evil that we are fighting.

Call it what you will — Islamic radicalism, militant Jihadism, or Islamo-facism — this form of radicalism exploits Islam to serve a violent vision that denies all political and religious freedom.

Bush said that extremists have distorted the idea of jihad into a call for terrorist murder of Christians, Hindus, Jews, and even Muslims who do not support their radical view.

The president made it clear that it is America and its partners in Europe, the Middle East, North Africa, and Asia that stand in the way of the terrorists’ goals.

For the most part, the president’s message was lost with an agenda-driven media and a nonchalant public. As I listened to his speech on the radio, the very next station break brought yet another report on the latest poll numbers that show the president’s approval ratings have fallen to 36 percent. But, hard numbers without substantiation have little meaning. For instance, President Harry Truman had a far lower approval rating at one point, yet he is regarded as one of the greats.

What does all this mean? It means that the world is at a very dangerous time in history. There is a lesson here and it needs to be remembered.

Dr. Richard Land vowed on his radio show that he “will not stop talking” about what happened in 1968 with the Tet Offensive when the communists were defeated. He will not forget what we did in Cambodia and left hundreds of thousands to suffer under tyranny.

Because, it was not that we lost on the battlefield in Vietnam, but in the war of public opinion, thanks to people like Walter Cronkite who said flatly that Americans were too dumb to make decisions for themselves. This is the same elite who still complain that “dumb” Americans elected President George W. Bush. They now see this as a last-ditch effort to “get Bush” even at the expense of America’s future.

They are making the war on terror a bitterly partisan issue at the expense of America’s future.

Many view this war on terror as World War IV, with WW III being the cold war. We will win or lose WW IV in Iraq, and leaving now would be losing. Losing would be catastrophic, something even the liberals admit.

It all comes down to who is right — not for political purposes — but for our future. Will our elected leaders who voted to go to war stand behind their decisions even when the going gets tough?

Or will the terrorists win with predictions that America will, once again, turn and retreat? Remember this is not about Republican or Democrat; the president is not running for re-election.

The president has spoken. He said that our will is strong. We will settle for nothing less than victory.

He needs the country’s support now more than ever. We must stand united against the evil that preys on our freedom and on our future.
