Vermont ranked as smartest state in the country

BARRE, Vt. --Vermont is the brightest state in the country, according to a Kansas publisher.

Quitno Press ranked Vermont at the top of the list, ahead of Connecticut, which was second, followed by Massachusetts, New Jersey and Maine.

"Vermont shines in many key areas of education," said Scott Morgan, president of Morgan Quitno Press. "A high percentage of its students excel in reading, writing and math. In addition, schools in Vermont have smaller class sizes and lower pupil-teacher ratios than in most other states."

The publisher compiled its yearly list of the smartest states measuring 21 factors.

Last year, Vermont ranked third, and second the year before.

Arizona was at the bottom of the list, below Mississippi, New Mexico, Nevada and California.

The publisher also says Vermont is the healthiest state, the second safest and the third most livable.

Good news, tomtom. I'll be sure to pass it along. Kinda wondering what states beat us out for livable and safest. :?:

While Vermonters may be basking in all of their brainy-istic glory, they have more reason to celebrate.

The same group that calls us the smartest also says we are third most livable (behind New Hampshire and Minnesota). They say we are the healthiest (just ahead of New Hampshire and Massachusetts). And, believe it or not, we are the second-safest, just behind that Shangri-La called North Dakota.

All of those accolades, however, have pushed us way down one of Morgan Quitno's lists. We are only the 12th-most improved state. Bummer.

We can take solace, however, in the fact that we're the fourth-best place to work in the nation, according to a recent study by the University of Massachusetts.

We have the country's 93rd-best university (University of Vermont) according to U.S. News & World Report. And a survey by a Pittsburgh magazine says we have the fourth-best license plate in the land — behind Colorado, Alaska and Wyoming — because of its "classic white-on-green design."

If none of that impresses you, know that Vermont — our smart, safe, livable, healthy Vermont — is home to the world's largest happy bee, a 12-foot insect in West Dover. So says roadsideamerica.com.

You could look it up.

Of course, being as smart as you are, you probably already knew that.
