NASHVILLE, Tenn. - A Vanderbilt punter has been charged with assault after police said he hit his ex-girlfriend and a teammate, then threatened him with a knife in the off-campus apartment the two players shared.
Kyle Keown was arrested Dec. 1 and charged with domestic assault and aggravated assault, The Tennessean reported Thursday on its Web site.
A spokesman for Vanderbilt football referred questions to school administrators. A phone message left with the dean of students office after business hours Thursday was not immediately returned.
Nashville police spokesman Don Aaron was not immediately available Thursday evening.
Citing affidavits from the Metro Nashville Police Department, the newspaper reported Keown was accused of hitting Sarah Treichel when his roommate, backup quarterback Richard Kovalcheck, intervened. Keown reportedly hit Kovalcheck who struck back in self-defense.
After a scuffle, each man went into his own bedroom. Keown then came into Kovalcheck's bedroom through a balcony "holding a large knife above his head. The victim stated that the defendant told him that he was going to kill him," the police said. Kovalcheck and Treichel fled and called police.
Keown joined Vanderbilt in 2003 as a punter and redshirted. He played in two games in 2004 and four in 2005, his last in the Commodores' 28-24 victory at Tennessee when he averaged 38.8 yards on four punts. He did not play this season.
Kovalcheck transferred to Vanderbilt this year from Arizona, and he was 10-of-14 for 63 yards passing.
