Picture of the USS Newport News taken on October 2, 1972 from the USS Bainbridge. Picture taken while the Bainbridge was passing to honor the dead aboard the USS Newport News. After it suffered a premature detonation of a shell fired from the center gun of the #2 turret.

Believe she was the last US cruiser to use silk bag black powder charges to fire rounds from 8" guns.
