BAGHDAD, Aug 4, 2006 (AFP) - US jets dropped three 500-pound (227-kilo)
bombs on a suspected insurgent house southeast of Baghdad, destroying it in
an operation against a car bomb building cell, the US military announced
Friday.

The Thursday raid, part of a series to disable insurgents that "possessed
the capability to carry out more attacks against innocent Iraqis", began
with the killing of three suspects who tried to flee when US forces arrived.

Another group of suspects tried to get away in a car which was then disabled
by US ground forces, but not before the insurgents fired on "supporting
aircraft" but with "minimal effect".

"The terrorists were observed running into a nearby house previously
identified as a meeting site," said the statement, it was at this point that
the massive air strike with three 500-pound precision bombs occurred.

Two such bombs killed Al-Qaeda in Iraq leader Abu Musab al-Zarqawi in June.

The US military could not say how many people were killed in the air strike.
