WASHINGTON, Oct 13, 2006 (AFP) - US troops who killed a British journalist
in Iraq in 2003 followed their rules of engagement, the Pentagon said
Friday, rejecting a British coroner's verdict that the killing was
unlawful.

The Pentagon said its own investigation into the incident, in which British
journalist Terry Lloyd was killed, concluded in May 2003 that "US forces
followed the applicable rules of engagement."

"The Department of Defense has never deliberately targeted non-combatants,
including journalists," the Pentagon said in a statement. "We have always
gone to extreme measures to avoid civilian casualties and collateral
damage."
