BAGHDAD, Iraq_Four U.S. soldiers and one marine have died in Iraq, two in
fighting in the restive Anbar province, one after being hit by a roadside
bomb in Baghdad and two from non-hostile causes, the U.S. military said
Tuesday.
One soldier died on Tuesday afternoon when the vehicle he was traveling in
was struck by a roadside bomb southwest of Baghdad, the military said in a
statement.
On Monday, a Marine with the Regimental Combat Team 5 died after being
injured in "enemy action" in Anbar a day earlier, another statement by the
U.S. military command said. Anbar province is a Sunni Arab insurgent
stronghold that has seen some of the worst fighting since the U.S.-led
invasion in 2003.
A Nebraska National Guardsman with the 1st Squadron, 167th Cavalry at Camp
Anaconda, about 80 kilometers (50 miles) north of Baghdad, died Monday of
injuries he received during a Humvee accident on Aug. 21, a separate
statement said.
Two other Nebraska soldiers who were in the Humvee when it rolled over into
a canal are undergoing treatment for injuries, the statement said.
One soldier from the 1st Brigade, 1st Armored Division, also died Monday,
but due to "non-hostile causes."
On Sunday, A soldier assigned to Regimental Combat Team 7 died after being
wounded in fighting in Anbar.
U.S. officials have not released the names of the dead soldiers pending
notification of their families.
The military earlier reported that eight other soldiers also died Sunday in
and around Baghdad, making it one of the deadliest days of the U.S. military
in recent months.
More than 2,600 U.S. military personnel have died since the beginning of the
Iraq war in March 2003, according to an Associated Press Count.
