Did you hear of that Italian journalist from a communist newspaper who was kidnapped in Iraq one month ago?
Yesterday it was big news here. She was rescued by Italian intelligence (military secret services) and she was on a car of ours on its way to Baghdad Int Airport. Operation had succeeded. At a road block (do you also call it check point?) some US soldiers opened fire on the car and our agent got killed by american bulletts. Accidentaly but still happened. Big shock here.
The journalist was hit too, and another Italian agent is critically wounded.
I am going to write an article on my famous blog today, so I wanted to ask you: how does a road block work? Because they were saying that the Italian car was speeding too fast and the US soldiers had to shoot.
It was nighttime and raining.
Is that true that in these cases usually one man stands in the front and signals the vehicles to slow donw and another one is some meters behind him ready to open fire on any suspect car?

I am by no means an expert. But 1st let me say that this is a tragic incident and one I feel could have been avoided. If there had been communication. I saw another post in the thread I posted on this saying they should have hooked up with an escort. absolutely that is a war zone you cannot approach a check point at a high rate of speed and show no signs of stopping. Especially when so many soldiers have been killed in just that manner. They will shoot ! And I certainly do not blame them Their should have been some kind of coordination.

They Might have been Speeding to get to safety as soon as possible :? :( .

The death of one of Italy's most senior intelligence officers in the shooting, Nicola Calipari, cast a pall of gloom over what should have been a joyous occasion, says the BBC's David Willey in Rome.

generally there are More than 2 Solders .......... When you see a Vehicle Approching the First move is to Signel to Slow down By Hand Signals or Flash Light ( depends if it';s night or Day) ........ Second Step is to Fire warning Shots in the Air ......... it is after that if the Vehicle dosen't stop that you shoot at the tyres or the engine of the vehicle .

I wonder why the Car didn't stop even after hearing the warning Shots ........ or did the US solders Fire warning Shots at all ........... Bush has Promised a Investigation lets see what the result comes out .

Check Points are usually manned by at least 2 senteries but usually more in a hot zone. Without knowing the configuration of the check point I could only speculate. So I asked one of my guys who is a USAR MP recently returned from Iraq.

The Check Points he manned were 4 man. ROE's were as follows.
Vehicles were signaled and verbally instructed to stop. Any vehicle refusing or appearing to refuse to stop were engaged. Due to car bomb threats. This included Humm vees as there is apparently a rash of stolen Hummers in country.
