A UNITED States fighter jet has crashed near the Tindal Royal Australian Air Force base in the Northern Territory, the defence force said today.
A spokesman said he had no other details at this stage, but could confirm the crash occurred near the base, south of Katherine, late this afternoon.

A UNITED States fighter jet had crashed near the Tindal Royal Australian Air Force base in the Northern Territory, the Australian defence force said today.
No one was killed nor seriously injured in the crash, near the base south of Katherine late this afternoon, a defence spokesman said.
The pilot of the F/A-18 was reported to have ejected before the crash.
A squadron of US F/A-18s had been training at the Tindal RAAF base in operation Southern Frontier for more than a month, the spokesman said.
The crash was being investigated, he said.
The US marine Corps F/A-18 hornet crashed 16km from the base, the spokesman said.
"The US pilot was rescued by a search and rescue helicopter from the RAAF base," he said.
"He was taken to the medical facility on the base where he was in a stable condition."
Base emergency procedures were enacted after the crash and an accident investigation team had been formed.
