BAGHDAD, Sept 20, 2006 (AFP) - The US military expects an increase in
insurgent violence during the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan, spokesman for
multinational forces in Iraq US General William Caldwell said Wednesday.

"We are anticipating an increase of foreign fighters in Ramadan. Ramadan is
a period of increased violence," Caldwell told journalists in Baghdad.

Ramadan, expected to start Saturday or Sunday depending on the sighting of
the moon, is a month of introspection and piety, but has also in recent
years been plagued by a surge in attacks by Islamic extremists, notably in
Iraq.

Caldwell said that 630 suspected foreign fighters from 25 countries had been
captured in Iraq since January 2005, including Egyptians, Syrians, Saudis
and Sudanese.

Around 370 suspects were still being held while the others had been sent for
trial or released for want of evidence.
