BAGHDAD, Oct 7 (AFP) - US forces have killed at least 29 rebels in fighting in western Iraq over the past 36 hours, a US military statement said Friday morning.

Multinational force aircraft killed 20 when they bombed an abandoned hotel in Husaybah, near the Syrian border, which had been taken over by rebels loyal to Al-Qaeda in Iraq, the statement said.

Aircraft late Wednesday dropped four precision-guided bombs on the three-storey hotel which, according to the US military, was being used for staging attacks and storing weapons.

On Thursday, a M1-A1 Abrams tank supporting infantry killed two rebels in nearby Karabilah, in the Euphrates Valley.

And in another air strike, three buildings were destroyed and seven rebels killed east of Karabilah after they opened fire on approaching marines, the statement said.

The latest US-led offensives in Al Anbar province aim "to deny Al-Qaeda in Iraq the ability to operate freely in the Euphrates River Valley and to prevent the terrorists from influencing the local population through murder and intimidation," the statement added.
