Oops I think I posted this in the welcome section when it belongs here...

Hi! I am Liz, I am 21, and I am looking to join the Coast Guard soon. I've been thinking about it since high school, and if I am going to do it, I need to do it soon.
I know that I have to lose 50lbs or 8% body weight before I can join. At least.
I am looking for advice. Advice from people who've done it before- USCG.

I am humbly asking your help. I've been actively seeking answers to questions for about 2 months now, can't get in contact with a recruiter- maybe has something to do with the fact that I live in Ohio.

I will be moving to CA. I have family there. I am just wondering if I should move first, and then join, or join first and then move.

I am wondering if I should do active or reserve. I know reservists only 'work' once a month. Is this the job that they sign up for, or is it something else?

I want to be a store keeper SK when I join. I know from other answers you have to have an asvab score of 60 to join, would it be higher for this sort of job? Are the coast guard even recruiting right now? Do they do sign-on bonuses like the Army?

If I am an active guard then would online school be out of the question?

What is active duty like?

What is reserve duty like?

What is basic training for Coast Guard like? Do you get paid for basic training?

I want to join one of the two before I turn 22. I turn 22 in November... do you think that it's possible, or feasible?



I appreciate any answers anyone can give me on these questions... I know that I will think up more as I go along.

i have the same struggle except I'm 17 and i live in puerto rico but i;m a female with all the question you do and im hoping to get some answers too because i want to be sure before i graduate so i can be ready i hope that if you join the coast guard we can meet!

If I were you, I'd do active duty first unless you have some kind of regular job already lined up and you want to do some Coast Guard stuff as well.
It's easier to be active duty and then go reserve than do the opposite.

I agree with Redneck. Also bear in mind that we have SKs in the Navy as well, if for some reason the CG doesn't work out.

Hey i'm already went trough the enlistment process and well first of all it doesnt matter if you move or not becase they are probably going to send you somewhere that is not your home. reservist work one weekend a month and 2 weeks in summer usually in port security i prefer active duty and choose any rate i want and i can still study online and they pay 4 it they do pay you in basic training and dont worry if its hard its just 8 weeks and its not so hard from what ive heard it mostly mentally tough and yes if you start now the enlistment process you can be ready before November:jump: good luck

Before you join, ask yourself why are you joining the military, and more specifically the why coast guard.

The coast guard is the smallest branch of the military which means it has the least amount of job opportunities (last time i checked it only have about 6-7 enlistment MOS's).

My friend wanted to go into the coast guard because he was a first class swimmer, and wanted to be a rescue swimmer. He never made it though, the USCG is very selective, and super selective for rescue swimmers.

well the coast guard actually has 22 or 24 rates (they aren't called MOS's) and yes they are selective but is just because they want the best not any person you have to be smart and willing to work very hard
