US to buy Russian Helos for Afghans

Looks like the US Navy is buying MI-17s for Afghanistan. Stimulating the wrong economy, it seems.

The Afghan Air Crews and Ground Crews are familier with the Russian air frames and systems. Easier than providing them say UH60's and then training them up.

Actually it saves costs.

No doubt about all of that. But....Back in the (60s?) Liberal policy wonks in the State Dept decided Afghanistan was going to be a neutral Country in the East-West struggle & the US refused to sell modern equipment to them. The Russians filled the void, eventually resulting in the takeover of the Country & all the following difficulties. It would seem better long term, for us, if they have US made equipment, espicially if we are the ones actually paying for it.

I think it is better that the corrupt warlords sell russian technology than US technology. We have been giving a lot of equipment to the Iraqi's and the ONLY reason that it has not showed up on the international arms market is because we are still there to watch it. Once we leave, they will likely sell a lot of it. We have been equipping the Iraqi Army with M16's and M4's. Don't know why, they already have AK's over there and the M16 family requires too much maintenenance. Most, if not all of the weapons were locked in an arms room and never used.
