Protesters want to end Pakistan's co-operation with the US

Thousands of Pakistanis have taken part in anti-American protests after an attack on a village near the Afghan border that killed 18 people.

 The main demonstration was held in the main city of Karachi with protesters chanting "Death to America".


The missile strike apparently targeted al-Qaeda's deputy Ayman al-Zawahiri, who was said not to have been there.


The US has not commented on the strike. Pakistan has protested, but its leader warned people not to harbour militants.

"If we kept sheltering foreign terrorists here... our future will not be good," said President Pervez Musharraf in speech broadcast on state television.
US media say the attack was carried out by the CIA.

Zawahiri has eluded capture since the US overthrew the Taleban in Afghanistan in 2001 despite a $25m bounty on his head.


Osama Bin Laden's second-in-command is regarded as the ideological brains behind the al-Qaeda network, says BBC security correspondent Gordon Corera.


The Egyptian has also become its most visible spokesperson, issuing a number of video and audio tapes, whilst Osama Bin Laden has not been seen or heard from for more than a year.


Musharraf criticised
About 10,000 people rallied in Karachi, Pakistan's biggest city, chanting "Death to American Aggression" and "Stop bombing innocent people".
Hundreds of riot police were deployed to keep order.

A leader in the coalition of anti-US Islamic groups that organised the nationwide protests said General Musharraf must step down.


"The army cannot defend the country under in his leadership," Ghafoor Ahmed told protesters in Karachi.


In Samarbagh, near the Damadola village where the attack occurred, protesters denounced Gen Musharraf for co-operating with the US.


Foreign presence
Damadola is in the Bajaur tribal area, about 7km (4.5 miles) from the Afghan border.

Jets - or in some accounts a Predator drone - reportedly fired missiles at a particular housing compound in the village.


Reports citing unidentified Pakistani officials say the strike was launched on intelligence that Zawahiri had been invited to dinner in the village.


However, a senior intelligence official told Reuters news agency they had no evidence he was present at the meal.


Damadola was the stronghold of a banned pro-Taleban group, the Tehrik-e-Nifaz-e-Shariat-e-Mohammadi, the agency reported an official as saying.


The US has about 20,000 troops in Afghanistan, but Pakistan does not allow them to operate across the border.

Hopefully we got him.

You let some one like that into your house you take that risk. Im more imprssed with the fact that we cordinated a multiple UAV operation and had them operate and attack insynch.
 
We pulled our punch to try and save lives. I hope that didn't comprimise the mission and miss the guy.

If people continue to cooperate with AlQaeda terrorists and offer them food and shelter then they have earned ANY response they get - whether it's having bombs and rockets rained on their heads or having coalition forces riddle their homes with tank rounds and rifle and machine-gun bullets.

If you run with dogs, don't be surprised that you end up with fleas and have to have flea powder sprinkled to get rid of them.

You mean so Momar can drink the blood of every American man, woman and child in America.

The worlds only superpower had good intelligence and was operateing to defend itself. Some people that were on friendly terms with him invited him to dinner and they got in the way. Tough oats.
 
It's sad when innocents die. That sort of thing happens in war. You expect it, but never accept it. The question is not if it happens, but can you ensure you minimze it while achieving a legitimate objective.

There was no evidence Zawahiri had ever been in that village.Furthermore, do you think women and children would invite him over?

Uh huh, you put your family at risk when you invite that monster over for dinner.
 
This act came at a Faulty intelligence. There was no Al-Zawahiri in that region.

"I don't know him. He was not at my home. No foreigner was at my home when the planes came and dropped bombs," Zaman said. This is one of the comments of a victim, whose house has been destroyed in the attack!

Also,

Speaking as he dug through the rubble of his home, Zaman said he heard planes at around 2:40 a.m. and then eight huge explosions. He said planes had been flying over the village for three or four days.

The tragedy unfolds:

At another destroyed house, Sami Ullah, a 17-year-old student, said 24 of his family members were killed and vowed he would "seek justice."

After this act, I doubt that CIA is a credible intelligence network.

First it was bad intelligence in IRAQ and now this! :sarc:

US military seriously needs to consult our government before making any such actions. Because of two things:

1) such acts will give rise to more radicalism in the region, which is not good for War On Terror.
2) Pakistan is a sovereign nation and this stance should be respected.

I have grown weary of people like you sitting on their couch watching CNN or whatever and then issuing statements like that. Unless you actually have personal access to the files pertaining to the evidence, which you do not, your statement is baseless. What you see reported on the news is pretty much like Cliffs Notes. For the safety and security of the brave soldiers carrying out the ops, Momar, people like you and I don't get access to the inside information. Nor should we.

And you think that what FOX or ABC reports is perfectly correct. I have some respect for CNN though!

Seriously, you also need to show me some proof to convince me that Zawahiri was there in that region when the attack took place!

I have directly posted the comments of the people who are victims of this attack and I know better about what is going on in my country.

did u expect the "victims" to say: "ye, i invited a terrorist leader over for dinner". :p

its not like u can actually trust these guys... anyways... if proof is given that the CIA was 100% mistaken then i'm going to withdraw my flaming comment 100%.. but it doesn't really look like that atm :sorry:

Absolutely not. I don't even watch that garbage. I think that it is sedicious that they report as much as they do on the subject matter even if a lot of it is drivel.

Seriously, you also need to show me some proof to convince me that Zawahiri was there in that region when the attack took place!

I hadn't read your post before I was responding to momar's comment. I would trust your statements way before I would a news report or certainly Momar who is in Germany as far as I know. However, I trust enough in my country's trained specialists that I believe that they acted on the best possible information. I am very sad for the loss of any of your innocent countrymen / women / children, TBA PAKI. I really am. This is a war that all our countries are engaged in and in war, terrible things like this happen. Hopefully, in the end, as it has in other wars the end will justify the means.

Yeah! at one time we believe that War on Terror is going smoothy and then a tragic event happens, which puts questions in our minds and worst of all, further de-stabilizes the situation in that region.

I want these Al-Qaeda radicals to crumble but what US is doing is not the right thing. Seriously, this is the 3rd attack on our soil by US forces in a single month.
