Underwater Radar

im not sure how radar works, but i know that sonar works becuase it sends a signal which bounces back when it hits the air bubbles which surround objects in the water.
not sure how radar detects stuff

Radar works by shooting out radio waves then seeing if any of them get reflected back by things such as planes and even tanks. Sonar works by shooting out sound and seeing if that bounces back off subs, boats, and the like. They use sonar in the water because sound travels better under water while radar waves wouldn't travel well at all underwater.

The US employs a pretty impressive acoustics detection system in the Atlantic Ocean. There are mics located all over that was designed to track Soviet subs during the Cold War. That was a good early warning system for the US.

But if you're talking about shipboard sonar, then that's different. The US uses TACTAS which is a cable full of mics that they drag behind their ships to detect enemy subs. I believe the new Virginia Class subs are using the Conformal Acoustic Velocity Sonar (CAVES). That's just a fancy new sonar system that they're putting into service starting with SSN-774.
