JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Umpire Garth DeFelice was hit in the neck by a pass and taken to Baptist Hospital for further examination Sunday. DeFelice had X-rays at Alltel Stadium before being transported by ambulance to the hospital. An NFL official said DeFelice has a history of neck problems.
DeFelice was unable to get out of the way of Jaguars quarterback David Garrard's third-down pass over the middle in the second quarter. He dropped to the ground and stayed there several minutes while Jaguars trainers examined him.
He walked off the field without much assistance, but trainers decided he should have precautionary X-rays.
The officiating crew continued short-handed, going with six men instead of the usual seven.
