ON A TRIP TO VIETNAM as an investigative team leader searching for POW/MIAs, I was interviewing a grizzled mountain tribesman. He spoke only his own tribal dialect, and I had to use a translator provided by the Vietnamese government. The old Montagnard began rapidly gesturing in the air with his hands while providing loud sound effects. His actions seemed to mimic two aircraft attacking a ground position, with machine guns firing and bombs exploding. Hoping that he was providing valuable information, I waited eagerly for the translation. "He doesn't know anything," said the interpreter.
