DURING MY FIRST DAYS AT WEST POINT, I tried hard to achieve a perfect room inspection, and one morning I thought I had succeeded. With white gloves on, the company commander checked every corner of the room, and the gloves came away clean. I was feeling proud of myself. But then he said, "Raise your left foot, Mister!" and ran a gloved finger along the sole of my shoe.
