TORONTO - (AP) A vehicle carrying four members of Canada's
diplomatic staff in Iraq was fired on by U.S. troops but nobody was injured, according to media reports.
The vehicle came under friendly fire Tuesday after it apparently attempted to pass an American convoy inside Baghdad's heavily fortified Green Zone, U.S. military spokesman Lt. Col. Barry Johnson said in a statement reported by Canadian Press.
"There were two convoys. We're looking at the reason shots may have been fired," Johnson said.
Pamela Greenwell, a spokeswoman for the Foreign Affairs Department in Ottawa, confirmed the incident but said she could not identify who was in the vehicle.
Greenwell told Canadian Press it involved "four members of Canada's small mission in Iraq."
CTV News reported the Canadian vehicle was traveling alone from the British legation to Canada's quarters in Baghdad when it attempted to pass the U.S. convoy and failed to respond to hand signals from American troops.
When the car failed to stop, the soldiers shot over the vehicle and then fired into the engine block, CTV said.
