A U.S. Defense Department team has begun training Egyptian forces to detect tunnels used to smuggle goods into the Gaza Strip, a U.S. Embassy spokesman said Monday.
Spokesman Robert Greenan said the temporary program falls under a military cooperation agreement. In January, officials said Egypt had accepted a U.S. offer to train its forces in using electronic detection equipment, using $23 million in U.S. aid.
Gaza residents toppled walls separating Gaza from Egypt in late January, delaying the effort. Israel complains that Egypt does not do enough to stop smuggling of arms and other contraband into Gaza.
