BAGHDAD -- An American soldier was killed on Thursday when a roadside bomb
hit his vehicle in northern Iraq, the military reported on Saturday.

"A Task Force Lightning Soldier from the 105th Engineer Group was killed
Thursday as a result of an improvised explosive device while conducting
vehicle operations in northern Iraq," the military said in a statement.

The name of the soldier is being withheld pending notification of next of
kin, it added.

Over 2,740 U.S. soldiers have been killed in Iraq since the U.S. -led
invasion in March 2003, according to media count.
