The U.S. military's requirement for blast-resistant trucks to protect troops in Iraq and Afghanistan increased 19 percent to $8.4 billion as homemade bombs killed more soldiers than any other source of attack.
Total requests for the truck program from all branches of the U.S. military have risen to more than 7,700 vehicles from an estimate of 6,738 vehicles valued at $7.04 billion in February, Bill Johnson-Miles, a spokesman for the U.S. Marine Corps, said Tuesday.
The military is rushing the new trucks to Iraq where improvised explosives are the leading source of U.S. casualties.
Homemade bombs accounted for 56 percent of the 2,607 U.S. combat fatalities as of March 24, and 49 percent of the 24,314 injuries, according to the latest Defense Department data.
