BAGHDAD, Iraq - (AP) The Iraqi army took control from the U.S.
military of a central Baghdad base Tuesday responsible for providing security to Iraqi government buildings, the U.S. command said in a statement.
The U.S. 4th Infantry Division's 4th Brigade Combat Team officially transferred authority of the base, located in the heavily fortified Green Zone, to the Iraqi army's 5th Brigade, 6th Division.
The handover was the latest by the United States as part of a program to transfer responsibility to Iraq's so that the U.S. can draw down its forces here.
Iraqi Col. Mohammed Wasif said his brigade comprises three battalions and will be based in central Baghdad's palace district, where the U.S. Embassy and the Iraqi government buildings are based.
