U.S. Assistant Secretary of State Richard A. Boucher met Sunday with a Pakistani provincial leader, who urged "peaceful dialogue" to resolve "political problems" in the country's northwest, near the border with Afghanistan. Boucher's meeting in Peshawar with North-West Frontier Province Chief Minister Amir Haider Hoti had been planned for some time, the U.S. Embassy in Islamabad said. Washington wants more done to root out al-Qaeda and Taliban fighters based inside Pakistan. The Pakistani government has tried unsuccessfully to make peace deals with the insurgents, drawing criticism from the United States.
