In an interview just 36 hours before his death, a top Taliban commander boasted he was training U.S. and British citizens to carry out suicide attacks in their own countries.
"We will be executing attacks in Britain and the U.S. to demonstrate our sincerity to destroy their cities as they have destroyed our cities," Mullah Dadullah said in a videotaped interview broadcast yesterday on ABC's "World News."
The one-legged insurgent leader was killed Saturday by U.S.-led forces in southern Afghanistan, NATO said.
In what was probably his final media statement, Dadullah told an Afghan interviewer that it was "our religious and moral duty to train suicide bombers against the nuclear power of the infidels."
Dadullah, who orchestrated a rash of suicide attacks and beheadings, was the second top-tier Taliban field commander to die in six months, after a U.S. airstrike killed Mullah Akhtar Mohammad Osmani in southern Afghanistan in December.
Dadullah's death is widely regarded as the biggest blow against the Taliban since U.S.-led forces chased the Islamic militia from power in 2001.
