BAGHDAD, Iraq_A U.S. Army soldier was killed in fighting during a raid south
of Baghdad to capture "foreign terrorists," the U.S. military said Thursday.

The soldier was killed Wednesday "when his unit came in contact with enemy
forces," said a statement by the U.S. military command. It said two
terrorists were also killed during the fire fight.

"The unit was conducting operations to rid Iraq of foreign terrorists known
to be operating in the area," the statement said. It gave no other details.

The latest death raised to at least 2,613 the number of U.S. military
personnel who have died since the beginning of the Iraq war in March 2003,
according to an Associated Press count.

The figure includes seven military civilians. At least 2,077 died as a
result of hostile action, according to the military's numbers.
