Two men fled to Andrews Air Force Base and remained at large for hours early yesterday after crashing their car into a perimeter fence while being pursued by police, authorities said.
The men apparently spent the time near a base housing area, at least a mile from the runway where Air Force One, carrying President Bush, took off later. The incident began in Charles County, where the pursuit began after a hit-and-run incident, authorities said. During the pursuit, a police car was struck, according to an Andrews spokesman.
In Prince George's County, the car swerved off Route 5 and smashed into a reinforced metal fence that surrounds Andrews about 2:30 a.m. the spokesman said. They fled onto the base in the darkness.
About 6:30 a.m., the spokesman said, the fugitives knocked on a base housing unit door. They were "obviously disheveled, and one was without shoes." Security was called, and the men were taken into custody without incident.
