BAGHDAD - The US military announced the death of another soldier Tuesday,
bringing to 12 the number now known to have been killed in Iraq over the
weekend.

The latest casualty was killed on Sunday in Baghdad by a roadside bomb.

US headquarters had already announced the deaths of six soldiers and
marines on Saturday and five on Sunday, and the latest fatality brought the
number killed in the first three weeks of October to 87.

On Monday another soldier was reported missing in Baghdad.

If the toll continues to mount at the same rate until the end of October it
will become the bloodiest month for US forces in Iraq since November 2004,
when they famously fought fierce streetbattles in the western town of
Fallujah.

At least 2,793 members of US forces have been killed or died accidentally
in the Iraq campaign since the March 2003 invasion, according to an AFP
count based on Pentagon figures.
