Turkey to buy anti-tank missiles from Russia

Turkey is buying 80 Russian Kornet E anti-tank systems. This is a laser guided missile with a range of 5,500 meters (during the day), or 3,500 meters (at night). The launcher has a thermal sight for use at night or in fog. The missile's warhead can penetrate 1200 mm of armor, which means that the side armor of modern tanks would be vulnerable, but not the front armor. The missile weighs 18 pounds and the launcher 42 pounds. The system was introduced in 1994 and has been sold to Syria (who apparently passed them on to Hezbollah for the 2006 war). In Lebanon, the Kornet proved more useful fired against Israeli troops in buildings.

Turkey is paying $70 million for 80 launchers and 800 missiles. Deliveries will begin next year.

Hah! So much for the Greek-Russian orthodox alliance. :smil:

Ahhh...Id asy the frontal armor is a bloody close call on all but the very latest tanks...1200mm of steel is a redicules figure, and just shows you that right now ATGMs have the upper hand untill active systems to destroy the in approach are put on western tanks. Kornet is a scary piece of kit and im glad to hear the turks are getting it, i like them:)

Why is there a day/night missile range difference? Isn't a laser beam the same damn laser beam day and night?

The target recognition range of the Thermal Imaging device is probably shorter than the range of the missile.

Could they be mounted on a BMP-3, Greece ordered a bunch not too long ago?

Would Russia sell to both?

Yes and yes. They think "hey, if the Americans sell to both, why don't we?" hehhe. Greeks were actually protesting Russia for selling the same missile to their historic rivals, but to the Russians it's like a bunch of flies buzzing. Russians will gladly sell their mothers as long as the price is right.

Well, the Spike in its long range versions(NTD) is probably suprior to any missile out there, but its far more expensive than the Russian ones, I should think.
