A true military mystery...

Alright, I apologize for this accidential discharge of a question...

But, what the hell does the white trim mean on a Communist country's vehicles? I understood it a little or at least I thought I did, when watching Soviet Military parades in from the 50s....

But even today, I see Chinese military vehicles for example still sporting white walls and wheel trim on parade?

I am dumbfounded, does it look good? Is there something tying white wheels and tires to Marxism/ Maoism Idealogy that I missed? Does it represent something in the socialists dream? Is it performance enhancing? Is it pyschological warefare? Or morale boosting? Is it painted? Or chalk? Does it smell good?

Is there a special cover piece over the tire that allows for a crew to quickly remove it as to expose the white and ready the military vehicle for a surprise parade?

Or is it just that d;-)mn good looking?

I mean looking at an Type 99 for example with white wheels...I just wonder...

It's a 56 ton fighting machine that fires an 125mm projectile....Not a 1949 Periwinkle blue Chrystler Windsor with a ragtop....

What did I miss?

Anyone here that has served or is serving in a Communist military force, any input is greatly appreciated. I am very interested in getting to the bottom of this.

Heres some examples of what I mean...

Cuban Missile Carriers sporting snazzy white walls and trim.

And of course the Orginal White wall tire trend starters, seen here decorating Soviet armored mobile Launchers.

North Korea doing it's part to keep the trend going

Beats me...maybe it's cheaper to paint the vehicles than to supply white parade gloves, slings, belts and anklets for the entire Red-Army?

I don't know either, wave after wave of police, army and other personel do have parade gloves.

I don't know really.

This is parade paintjob, i used to be stationed near a depot with old MT-LBs with wheels painted like that, the captain in charge explained it was done to make vehicles seem more uniform on parades.

@Yossarian.

During communist time the regime officials were watching, it was as in any authoritarian system pretty important to please them, hence various paintjobs and other things.

See that is what I origionally guested, is that the Politburo leaders for example just had a thing for it, and the trend stuck.

Does look rather odd at times however, with more recent Digital Camo on modern vehicles in China for example, it seems at a cross roads between modern fighting machine...and a 1963 Corvette...

Like the old saying goes "if it moves salute it if it doesn't paint it white" I think you will find that this is just BS for the parade

I asked my father who served in the Yugoslav Socialist Army Air Defense, he said that it was parade paint, for decoration during parades, and since regular training messed up the paint job anyway, the tanks would be repainted, if they weren't the training tanks, which most of the time they are, which come out cleaned up and painted fresh, to show the people how "strong" their forces are lol

It's just like the golden AK's or nickel plated ones, just for parades.
