A Turkish soldier was killed and seven were injured in a clash late Wednesday between Turkish troops and Kurdish rebels near Turkey's southeastern border with Iraq, the military said Thursday.
On Thursday, Mayor Osman Baydemir of Diyarbakir, the largest city in Turkey's mostly Kurdish southeast, was convicted of praising crime and criminals in remarks he made during Kurdish anti-government riots last year that lasted for weeks and left at least 10 people dead.
His 50-day prison term was converted to a $1,150 fine.
