My choices for top fighters are currently operational, I base my choices on overall combat abilities when equipt with their countries best air to air missiles. They are in random order;
F-22A, Typhoon, Rafale, F-15K/I/SG, Su-30MKI, F-16F, F/A-18E, Gripen JAS 39C &, J-11B

To me the most elegant or artistic fighter ever built is the YF-23!

My choice for the number one position has to go to the F-22A. It has super-cruise (at a much higher speed than its competition), computing power far above any other, a sensor suite second to none, it can maneuver with the most nimble and the lower altitudes and, then flying unlike anything else at very high altitudes.

I remember an interview with a female F-22 pilot (on the Discovery Channel) and she was just excited that she had recently been flying her F-22A at 800kts, above 60,000ft., while pulling "5G's"!! She was just excited talking about it. I have also read that exercise Northern Thunder, F-22As were making kills from 65,000ft.!!!! (This was before the USAF had said the F-22A was cleared to fly at 65,000ft.) Ultimately, the F-22 should -or will be cleared to a maximum altitude of 70,000ft! This will give the F-22's weapons more range and reduce the weapon's envelope of opponent's weapons.

I think that selecting the “best fighter” is extremely subjective. None of the aircraft listed would have been operational in WWII, there was not the technology or infrastructure to support them, not to mention their weapons system.

Categories must be established, the best fighter of a certain period, the best single seat fighter, the best multi engine fighter, the best night fighter, the most versatile fighter, etc. No one aircraft did or does everything the "best".

When you break it down to pure asthetics,

An Sukhoi 35 BM in winter camo and an VF 111 F 14A both take point in stealing my heart.

As for many of the options here, it just does not seem credible to consider a plane with little to none as far as operation records and stats.

yes, I`m agree with you but price of F-22 and other related costs of this fighter is very high and expensive, It`s a negative point for a fighter, the fighter`s like F-16 can do their job good with lower costs and It`s a important point in peace and war.

1. PAK-FA, 2. F-22, 3. F-35, 4. Typhoon, 5. MiG-35, 6. F-16, 7. F/A-18, 8. Dassault Rafale, 9. Su-30, 10. F-15
I have a problem with this list. The Pak-FA/T-50, MiG-35, the F-15SE, and, the F-35 are not operational. The F-15, F-16 and the F/A-18 with the most advanced avionics are marginal compared to the F-22A, the Typhoon and, the Rafale which are operational and are advance.

The F-22 was certainly the most advanced fighter, the only problem is the cost
Cost of the F-22 is only a problem due to politics! The USAF started the program back in 1981 but, Congress did not feel the USAF needed a more modern fighter! After all the F-15 had a kill ratio (at that time) over a 70+:0 and the F-16 also had a stellar kill ratio of 4:0. Within another year right after July of 1982 -Bekaa Valley, the F-16 had a kill ratio of 52:0!!
So, the ATF (YF-22 & YF-23) were put on the slow track for developement. In 1989 the cold war was ending, funds were cut more. In 1990, the administration informed the Pentagon that the F-22 was to be delayed in its operational date by 'at least' seven years and to inform the contractors that the production run would be at least in half! The F-22 was originally scheduled to become operational in the first year or so of President Clinton's second term in office -around 1995/96. So the F-22 fighter's cost went from the 'unit cost' of $52M -for 750 F-22s to $130M for 187 F-22s.

There is a real nice piece written by "VprWzl" over at F-16.net. He writes of his experiences of flying his F-16C against an F-22A and how other fighters did not do any! His first posting is the fourth posting on that page and he makes further on that page and further comments on page ten also. URL;

In 1953 one of the finest, if not the finest of its time was the AVRO Arrow designed and built in Canada, and exceptional aircraft with two of the Canadian built Orenda Iroquois engines, AVRO estimated that the aircraft would be capable of Mach2. In 1958 the Canadian ordered the scrapping of the type.

In 1957 Duncan Sands, Winston Churchill's son in law wrote a defence white paper for the British Parliament that manned fighter aircraft would be a thing of the past. It is said that the Duncan Sands white paper was one of the causes of the AVRO Arrow to be scrapped. The white paper also caused scrapping of new British manned fighters under development, including the TSR2, the English Electric Lightning only survived the scrap yard as it was too far ahead in its development.

Politicians should stick to what they know, getting drunk and shouting abuse at the opposition.

1st flight on the YF-22 was in 1991, talk about stretching things out! Yeah, the 20 B-2s made cost as much as the 100 originally scheduled, costs spread over fewer planes.
