Too old?

I turn 33 Sunday. I am not really seriously thinking of joining but I was curious if I were too old?

You may want to be a bit more specific. What country's military? France? United States?

As a general response, without reguard to service age limits, 33 is not too old to start a military career. I have seen men start at 35 and go on to have very productive careers in infantry, intelligence and even special operations.

You are right, Sorry...

Thats a funny thought, I could serve in either one, but I was referring to the US.

Strictly Hypothetical. Does having a college degree help any? I come from a long line of US.Army men, so lets say I would choose that.

Age limit for enlistment into the US Army is 34. Waivers are availible on a case by case basis for those over the age of 34. They are very possible to acquire, as I stated in the above post, I've known men to start at 35.

Officers cut off at 29, but it is possible to obtain a waiver up to 34.

A general degree will help, yes. If you enlist, you will start out as an E-4

If you can obtain a waiver, you could also look into becoming an officer since you have a degree. This is something you would have to discuss with your recruiter to see if it is possible.

The Army Reserves and National Guard are also viable options, their age limit is now 39.

mmarsh.......Well you not to old, but unless you going in a specialist your career could well be to short for to get any where. At 33 your body has seen better days and is on the downward spiral and you will hard pushed to keep up with those 18 year olds, and if can keep up with them how many years do you think that you can keep this up. The other thing is you did not mention just what section of the Army you hope to join, now a nice little job as clerk would probably be okay for you.

For what it's worth, I'm 31 and about to begin a career in the U.S. Army. I had a waiver approved for dependents. (I have three children.) If you have any specific questions about enlistment at your age, I may be able to help. I've spent the last several months intensively studying that very subject.

Just ask away! :D

I am a 31 y/o Corporal in the USMC. The hardest part for you or anyone joining the military late in life will be taking direction from those younger (read less life experience) and trying to keep up with them on the PT field. Expect alot of jokes and kidding round - from your rank peers - at your expense in reference to your age. Trust me, I get it all the time. It is all intended to be fun but it does get a bit old (no pun intended).

Don't let this turn you off to the military though. As I said, I am 31 years old and I find it very rewarding.
