Three killed, eight injured in China riots

Beijing, Dec 11 (PTI) At least three villagers were killed and eight injured in two days of violent rioting in southern China over inadequate compensation for land taken by a coal-based power plant, state media said today.
Hundreds of villagers attacked a wind power plant on Tuesday and assaulted police, Information Office of Shanwei city government in Guangdong Province said.

Describing it as "a serious violation of law," Xinhua news agency reported that the rioting was organised by a villager, Huang Xijun, who allegedly instigated villagers in Dongzhoukeng and Shigongzhai to besiege and attack a local wind power plant on Monday and Tuesday.

The first assault on Monday caused a seven-hour suspension of the plant's power generation. For the second onslaught, over 170 armed villagers used knives, steel spears, sticks, dynamite powder, bottles filled with petroleum as also fishing detonators, the report said.

Police, who tried to maintain order lobbed tear gas shells to break up the mob and arrested two "insurgents." However, Huang allegedly mobilised over 300 armed villagers to form a blockade and attempted to release the two by force, prompting the police to open fire.

"In the chaos, three villagers died, eight were injured with three of them fatally injured," Xinhua said, adding that a probe is currently on to find out the exact cause of deaths.

However, local residents claim that police killed up to 20 people when they fired at the demonstrators
