BAGHDAD, Sept 8, 2006 (AFP) - Insurgents killed three civilian bystanders
when they set off a roadside bomb against the convoy of a police chief in
Baghdad on Friday, a security official said.

Colonel Ali Mohammed, head of the police for Baghdad's Karkh district, was
targeted as his convoy was passing through the Zayuna neighbourhood in
central Baghdad, the official said.

Mohammed escaped the attack unharmed, but three pedestrians were killed and
six others wounded, including three policemen, the official said.

Police also said that they found the bodies of six men who had been tortured
and then shot dead in an apparent sectarian killing.

In the central Iraqi city of Diwaniyah, a translator kidnapped three days
ago was found dead, police said, adding he worked as an interpreter for the
US forces.
