Never understood why Germany never managed to improve its engine technology by reverse engineering something like the Merlin.

Even if they had just been able to repair and maintain a fraction of the aircraft they downed from the mid war period on it would have given them a sizable technological boost though.

For example being able to field something as sturdy as the P-47 Thunderbolt against the bomber streams or the P-51D against fighters would have extended the life expectancy of a Ludtwaffe pilot considerably.
