Thailand to sign deal for Swedish fighter planes
BANGKOK, Feb 10 (TNA) – Air Force head Air Chief Marshal Chalit Phukphasuk was scheduled to sign an agreement with the Swedish government on Monday during his trip to Sweden to buy Gripen fighter planes.
Under the deal worth Bt19 billion, the Royal Thai Air Force (RTAF) will purchase six JAS 39 Gripen aircraft. The deal which was approved by the previous government of Gen. Surayud Chulanont on January 8, 2008 also includes support, training and spare parts.
All the six aircraft are due to be delivered to the RTAF in early 2011.
ACM Chalit left Bangkok on Saturday and was scheduled to return home on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, newly appointed Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej, who is also defense minister, will hold a meeting with military commanders on Monday to convey to them his military policy.
Deputy Air Force head ACM Paisal Sitabutr will represent ACM Chalit at the meeting. (TNA) – E111
