Memo to Ike: Don’t mess with Texas.
More than 2,300 Texas Army and Air National Guard and other agencies personnel have been activated, as of Thursday morning, to gird the Lone Star State against the potential ravages of Hurricane Ike.
As of Thursday, Ike was a Category 2 storm with sustained winds of 100 mph headed for the southern Texas coast, likely to make landfall between Corpus Christi and southern Houston, said Texas Guard spokesman, Col. Bill Meehan.
“We’re flexing as the storm flexes,” Meehan said.
Thursday’s operations included C-130 medical evacuations conducted by the 136th Airlift Wing out of Fort Worth. Other Guard units, including the 149th Fighter Wing from Lackland Air Force Base and the 147th based at Ellington Field near Houston conducted surveys of the Texas coast.
The 331st Air Expeditionary Group which will be responsible for search and rescue operations, will be based at Ellington Field, according to release from U.S. Northern Command.
