A 12-person federal task force is at Fort Bragg this week to study how sexual assault is reported and how victims are treated.
The task force is traveling to military bases around the world, and to combat-zone camps, to talk with lawyers, chaplains, unit commanders and service members about sexual assault.
Their goal, said task force co-chair Louis Iasiello, is to see if regulations that protect victims of sexual assault are working.
They especially want to speak with victims, he said.
“We want to listen to the victims, to find out: Are they being revictimized in the process?” he said. “Our target base is everyone in uniform.”
Iasiello said the task force wants to find out if sexual assault reports accurately reflect the number of sexual assaults happening at bases around the country and overseas.
Fort Bragg is the third stop for the task force, which started work Aug. 11. The team leaves Fort Bragg on Thursday for Camp Lejeune and then will head to Germany.
Some time next summer, the task force will present its findings in a report to the Secretary of Defense.
Iasiello said it is too early for the task force to say what the military is doing correctly or incorrectly about reports of sexual assault.
