The headgear is a traditional thing in the green berets. You only wear it in the 8 weeks basic commando course. It itches like hell.
They also put a rope over you shoulders and behind your back, so your buddies can hold on to it when they are about to crash down. It happens alot. everybody get's his little 'moment'.

If you can understand and read dutch, i recommend you take a look on that website. The webmaster wrote his entire experience of the courses you have to do, to get the green beret.

The Netherlands hasn't got any mountains.

In the basic course u been tossed around in lot's of countries: Netherlands, Belgium, Poland and Germany

The mountain picture is taken in; Marche le Dames (Belgium). You go there in week 5 or 6, depends on the schedule.

The cold weather training is a standard issue every green beret must have done. But you do this after u completed the basic course, in the advanced commando course. Other courses u get are;

-Jungle course in martinique or suriname.
-Warm weather training in the states or in spain.
-rock climbing courses in belgium again or in scotland.
etc; etc; u name it, we do it.

The netherlands may be a small country, but that doesnt say anything about theyre armed forces. We are highly respected within international collegues. Our marines, green berets and the 11th air manouvre brigade(airborne rangers) kick ass.

Worked with the KCT and well as Dutch Marines .. all professionals and highly motivated troops.
 
Been walking the Nijmegen march three times, so I've had the pleasure to talk to several of your colleagues. :)
(that's also why I posted my comments about the mountains. I couldn't find a single one of them! ;) )

Sounds like an interesting course.

Hi, yes.

I worked with the: Attackdykarna, Särskilda Skyddsgrupp, the 1st Amphibian Brigade and the Lapplands Jägarregemente (Artic Rangers).

I worked with them on exercises in Holland, Sweden and Norway.
2 Months ago a specialist from the Attackdykarna came to my base. He volunteerd for a KCT frogman selection. (after that u will be in the *OWG course) He failed though. Broke his ankle while climbing a 'heli ladder' on a bridge. He fell off but his ankle was stuck. Accidents happen. Injuries are the most common reason to fail a course.


*OWG stands for Optreden Waterrijke Gebieden (Literally: Manouvre Water Rich Area's)
