Here comes the civie: what is a butterbar? I recollected that he kinda miscalculated the entire ordeal. In civilian terms I would call him a miscalculating poor dumb-ass, who died for no reason what so-ever. (It did show the succes of the earlier training though)

"Butter Bar" or "Boot Leut" is a term used to describe the lowest Commissioned Officer rank in any military.

I am not sure of the rank insignia of other countries but in the U.S. Military an O1 has one gold bar on each lapel. Hence the term "Butter Bar".

I thinking this threads is not very nice to call his a butterball because he from the Swiss. Should not doing judging from nation or race and name calling. Beside swiss is mroe famous for cheese or for they army knifes.

Many of them are as inexperienced as an enlisted serviceman/woman fresh out of bootcamp. It is used sometimes as a term of affection but generally decribes an inexperienced or newly commissioned officer. There is no race or nationality prejudice here.
