The Republic of Ireland manager Steve Staunton was threatened at gunpoint last night outside the team's hotel in Portmarnock, with the Irish Garda subsequently arresting a man in his 30s for firearms offences following a chase on to a nearby beach.
Staunton, whose squad are preparing for tomorrow's friendly against Holland at Lansdowne Road, was unhurt but understandably shocked after being confronted outside the Portmarnock Hotel and Golf Club. It is understood that he was approached outside the main entrance to the side's hotel early last night and threatened with what appeared to be a gun.
The 37-year-old manager, who took charge of the Ireland team in January, promptly fled into the hotel reception where he reported the incident to hotel staff. Police arrived within minutes and proceeded to chase the suspect on to nearby dunes where a man was eventually apprehended, with Garda officers combing that area of coast last night in search of the firearm.
The man, who can be held for up to 72 hours for questioning, was in custody at nearby Malahide police station last night with the Football Association of Ireland confirming that Staunton had not been harmed in the incident. "He is absolutely fine and looking forward to taking the team for training tomorrow as normal," confirmed a spokesman. The FAI pledged to review security around the team following the incident, which took place just before 8pm.
"Gardai in Malahide arrested a man this evening following an armed incident in Portmarnock," said a spokesman for the local police last night. "We have that man in custody. "He was arrested in the vicinity under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act, with Gardai continuing to search the area for the weapon." Police later confirmed that the suspect is believed to have a history of psychiatric problems. The majority of Ireland's players convened at the hotel late on Sunday evening with the team holding their customary press conference there yesterday. While the squad usually prepare in relatively relaxed surroundings at the team hotel, this is the second firearms incident that has occurred there in the last three years. The hotel was subjected to an armed robbery in November 2003 in which a gun was fired into the ceiling while the Irish squad were eating in the restaurant. No one was hurt in that incident.
