AFTER OUR FIRST GRUELING WEEK of basic training at Parris Island, S.C., we assembled at the squad bay in front of the drill instructor's table to go over lessons in the Marine Handbook. Then we were allowed to ask questions. "Sir," said one private, "what are our chances of going overseas?"

The D.I. raised a callused hand and extended three fingers. "There are three kinds of Marines," he answered. "The ones who are overseas, the ones who have been overseas and the ones who are going overseas. So I would say your chances are pretty damn good."
