Topic: SPIW why closed ?

In the 1960, USA made an investigation a program's named Spesial Purpose Individul weapon (SPIW). Within the program was developed needle-shaped bullet (Armoured Piercing Fin-Stabilised Discarding Sabot) cal. 5,45; 5,6 or other. What were the reasons for closing SPIW? I heard now is make similar bullet for cal. 20..30-mm, it's true?

I think programs like these get opened and closed on a pretty regular basis. Regardless of what the official reason is, it can be anything.
Lack of technology to make it viable.
Cost to effectiveness ratio (not going to be issued to any line unit anytime soon).
Does it really improve over current options.
Overall price (too expensive to even justify very limited, specialized use).

Maybe the reason include on war in Socialist Republic of Vietnam. Military forces urgently needed a reliable rifle, therefore they begin using a 5,45-mm NATO bullet.

After all my opinion that this is very perspective idea (+with news technologies).

5.54mm never became a NATO standard round.

Sounds similar to Steyr's ACR concept. It looks like a pretty good idea, but the ammo seems like it'd cost more.

It is a bullet for Steyr ACR. Using the carbon steel flechette allow increase a "stop-effect". Because the bullet inside body is bending unlike DU-penetrator.
