Spitfire vs Hurricane

Its normal that the Hurricaine is credited with more Kills than the Spitfire. The Battle of France proved that the Hurricaine was inferior to the Me-109E-1/E-3. Therefore RAF Fighter Command made the smart decision to let the Hurricanes deal with the German Bombers where there low-altitude speed and ruggedness would be an asset and let the Spitfire I (which was slightly superior to the ME-109E-3) deal with the Escort Fighters. Therefore the Hurricane got the lions share of the kills as shooting down bombers as far easier than attacking fighters.
It should also be noted that the Hurricane MK.I was replaced as a day-fighter right after the BOB on the European Front. It was replaced by the hurricaine MK.IIb/c and resassigned as a maritine escort (convoy protection), fighter-bomber, recon aircraft, and night fighter. It was still used as a fighter in Africa and in Russia.

During the Battle of Britain it wasn't unusual for the roles to be reversed, Hurricanes taking on fighters and Spitfires taking on bombers. My Dad watched a Spitfire shoot down three bombers over Enfield that were on their their way to bomb the Royal Small Arms Factory at Enfield Lock.

It's AEROPLANE not Airplane!.

I must admit I hate the term airplane, but each to his or her own.

The Spitfire was a better design and was constantly upgraded through out the whole of WW2 and around some 23 Mks were made. The upgrades happened all through the BoB and by the end of the battle the Spitfire was a different plane than the ones that started the war in 1939. The Hurricane could no be upgraded and was turned into a ground attack aircraft that served well in the Middle and Far East and as a Tank buster when it was equipped with 40 mm cannons could be beaten and it got the name of the can opener

I wouldn't say the Spitfire was a better design, it was a more modern design. The Hurricane airframe could absorb far more punishment then the Spitfire and as Lee stated she was fitted with 40mm cannon, something the Spitfire airframe couldn't handle. The Hurricane was the "Ugly Duckling" of Fighter Command, but nonetheless a brilliant aeroplane.
