Spies and Commandos: How America Lost the Secret War in North Vietnam
- Kenneth Conboy & Dale Andrade
Univ. Press of Kansas pbk edn ISBN 0-7006-1147-9

Originally published eight years ago, this is the book I am reading at present and a very interesting read it is, too. It covers the history of the US' covert war against North Vietnam beginning in the 1950s with CIA operations after the partition of Vietnam to the end of the US presence in Vietnam. And as the title states, it gives an account of the reasons for this covert war's failure; as well, the book goes into the tragedy of the highly courageous operatives, both American and indigenous, that participated in this field of the war waged against the North Vietnamese. A well-written and well-documented account of an often-neglected phase of the combined US & South Vietnamese war effort in the Vietnam War, I'd recommend this easily readable book to anyone interested in the subjects of the Vietnam War and, more broadly, US involvement in SE Asia during the Cold War.
