Wow, looks like training has intensified since the last time I spoke to a Russian soldier. It's looking good though.

WOW,i always belived in Spetsnaz, although im against the unification of them, alphas and some other russian SF forces since that unit would be too huge and too complicated to operate with,i like the way it is now, several smaller units, specialised in certain tasks, agile, quick, and if handled well, very effective

PS:yea, and i always wanter a BDU like that (the 3 guys in the audience in background) that is my fav BDU,if someone haves one for sale or knows where can i get one cheap, please PM me,thank you

"Hard on the training ground, easy on the battle ground".- anonymous Russian Officer.

Sounds like a pretty common quote. "Train hard, fight easy"... or it's often used by sports coaches "train hard, play easy"

Spetsnaz is a police group, right? They specialize in anti-drug and anti-mafia busts is that correct? I have never been sure as to whether it was a police organization or military group.

It exist 3 type of Spets organizations, FSB(Team Alpha, Vympel,Vitaz) its all those hostage rescue units.

MVD(Interior troops) this is the regular Spetsnaz units. That fight in Chechenya.

GRU(recon) this is like most secret of all of those Spetsnaz units, it will be there objective to make terrorists attacks or assasiations before the war even starts

Here is a very good web page about Spetnaz GRU

I think it is more in the intuitive or common sense category. If you want to be a marathon runner, don't train by running around the block. etc..etc..!

tnx for the link  ,it helped a lot ;) so anyhow, will there be one composite unit or will they stay separated?

I remember when I was stationed in W. Germany that we had Spetsnaz as a high priority watch when we were on the trace. As a 18 year old soldier, it made me nervous.

Wow, I have to tell someone that the crash helmet was useless even for the handgun's bullet.

There are different sorts of SpetsNaz camoflage. I remembered at least one, Woodland SpetsNaz camoflage. Well there are plenty I don't remember.

At the beginning word Spetsnaz was connected ONLY to Army GRU units - the special units that DO a very special task - infiltrating enemy positions in order to:

1) Make special reconnaissance in hinterland (up to 1000km)

2) Annihilate enemy strategical objects (from HQs to mobile nuclear rocket launchers)

3) Seizure of enemy weapon prototypes

4) Capturing enemy commanders and any person of interest

Born in 1950, they were discovered by NATO only in 70'th.

Till the last times all the documents, even the most miserable, containing abbreviation "SpN" (=Spetsnaz) wore the "Top Secret" sign.

After the fall of USSR, some data regarding Spetsnaz were declassified, which make it possible for others to "steal" it.

That's why there are so many confusion, espacially in foreign sources, with this term.

With great respect for the other brothers in arms, Spetsnaz GRU is the meanest, toughest, and most elite.

"A" and "V" units are combined in FSB Special Operations Center, 8 October, 1998.

The Center was formed on base of "A" and "V" FSB directorates. Bone structures were added like headquarters, personnel department, secretariat, financial and economic department, internal security department and support departmets. So, SOC consists of "A" Department (group Alpha), "V" Department (group Vympel) and Special Operations Service.

"A" group is the strict anti-terrorist (or counter-terrorist) unit - they everyday responsibility is neutralization of terrorist groups seizuring any air, sea, or land object (transport, buildings, etc).

"V" group is a different matter - it's not so simple at all - during the peace-time period they everyday responsibility is neutralization of terrorist groups on nuclear objects like APPs (I do remember even such unique traing operation as seizure of atomic-powered icebreaker in open waters). Still, during prewar and war period they action as pure commando unit and they task is reversing - they should capture and destroy special objects like nuclear reactors, ICBM siloes, etc. In other words, they got an object, they get in, nobody but them get out.

In Soviet time they actually could perform any mission - intelligence, sabotage, you name - they do it. They training (two-three languages, few higher educations, marine, airborne, mountain, fire, explosive, knowledge of every weapon, vehicle, country and other) was the best in the world. Indeed they get through all this reforming, and re-reforming, and re-re-reforming, and re-re-re...reforming cr@p in ninetieth' with heavy losses, when Vympel lost operative and analytical departmets staff, when it was decided to place group under MVD command and a lot of professionals simply wrote a discharge reports.

During this period the group is reborn.

"Vitiaz" is an MVD unit, the Red Berets you saw on this pictures.

MVD(Interior troops) this is the regular Spetsnaz units. That fight in Chechenya.

As well as others.

The mess with Spetsnaz word was mentioned above.
